Maverick is a NEXT with the power to alter and manipulate a person's memories. All he has to do is touch your head for his power to work on you. This power can be explained as like someone putting layers and layers of new wallpaper on top of old paper. Rip off the new paper and the old paper is still there. So like with his powers, the old memories are still there but they are covered with the manipulated and altered fake memories. All it would take is the slightest contradiction for the person to remember the real memories.



So, here is one simple question.

Quick question, though: do contradictions that cause people to remember things have to come externally, or can it happen that a person remembers doing something, but then realizes that they would never do that, and that would be their own triggering contradiction?

They have to come from external things. Say, he erased Danny's memories of Sam and Tucker of being his friends. All someone would have to do to fix his memories would be to show him pictures of Sam, Tucker and he hanging out or show or give him things that Sam and Tucker gave him. If that makes sense.
